PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College women's basketball team (5-6) lost to No. 19/23 Delaware, 68-47, on Dec. 19 at Alumni Hall in Providence, R.I. Senior Rachel Barnes (Windsor, Conn.) scored 13 points to lead the Friars. Delaware forward Elena Delle Donne, led all scorers with 29 points while adding nine rebounds as the Blue Hens improved to 10-0 on the season.

Teya Wright (Paterson, N.J.) totaled 10 points and six rebounds scoring in double-figures for the 11th consecutive game. She is the only PC player to score in double figures in every game this year.

The Friars held an early 5-0 lead to open the game, forcing UDel to call a timeout 53-seconds into the contest. Delaware was able to tie the game at eight before going on a 19-5 run capped by a 3-point play by Sara Acker to hold a 27-13 lead. Delaware shot 53.8 percent from the floor and took a 36-22 lead into halftime. PC was led by Wright who had eight points and five rebounds in the first half. Barnes along with Alicia Cropper (Brooklyn, N.Y.) each registered seven points in the opening half. Delle Donne scored 17 points as Delaware shot 53.8 percent from the floor.

Delaware extended its lead to 50-25, opening the second half on a 10-3 run. It was 54-27 Delaware with 13:23 left in the game. Delle Donne had 27 points and the Friars had 27 points.

Trailing 39-65, PC went on an 8-0 run to make it 65-47. That would be as close as the Friars would get as the game ended 68-47.

Providence finished the game shooting 29.2-percent from the field (19-of-65), including 12.5-percent (2-of-16). Delaware shot 51.5 percent (23-of-45), including 50-percent from 3-point range (4-of-8). The Friars had just nine turnovers and outrebounded Delaware on the offensive end 18-9.

The Friars return to action on Thursday, Dec. 22 when they host Clemson. Tip-off is scheduled for noon at Alumni Hall in Providence, R.I.
