Women's Hoops Drops 50-41 Decision To FGCU

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College women's basketball team fell to Florida Gulf Coast, 50-41, on Dec. 12 at Alumni Hall/Mullaney Gymnasium in Providence, R.I. Junior guard Sarah Beal (Matthews, N.C.) recorded her second-straight double-double with 12 points and a career-high 12 rebounds.

FGCU, improves to 6-3 on the season, and was led by Whitney Knight's 16 points and 10 boards. Knight, the reigning Atlantic Sun Player of the Year, missed the previous eight games with a foot injury before being activated to play against Providence.

The Friars trailed 20-15 at halftime, after being held to just four points in the opening quarter (10-4). The Eagles started the second half on a 6-0 run to take a 26-15 lead and force a Providence timeout (8:02). Jovana `Yoyo' Nogic (Lisbon, Portugal) netted a three-point bucket at the 7:14 mark to cut the lead to eight (26-18), but FGCU pushed out to a 14-point advantage (36-22) with 2:42 on the clock. The Eagles took a 39-26 edge into the fourth and final quarter.

FGCU maintained a double-digit advantage in the fourth quarter until the Friars cut the deficit to nine (48-39) with 26-seconds left. A pair of Beal free throws got the Friars within seven points with 15 seconds on the clock, but the rally was cut short.

Nogic joined Beal in double figures with 10 points and added five rebounds, one assist, one blocked shot and a team-high two steals. Junior forward Aliyah Miller (Southaven, Miss.) contributed seven points and four boards.

Kaneisha Atwater chipped in double figures for the Eagles with 12 points and also tallied six rebounds, one assist and two steals.

Providence returns to action on Sunday, Dec. 20 against Rhode Island. The game will be played at 2:00 p.m. at the Ryan Center in Kingston, R.I.
