Women's Basketball Drops 78-75 Decision At Sacred Heart

FAIRFIELD, CONN. - The Providence College women's basketball team fell to Sacred Heart, 78-75, on Dec. 9 in Fairfield, Conn. Providence dropped to 6-5 on the year, while the Pioneers improved to 4-5.

Providence faced a 14-point deficit (21-7) with 2:18 remaining in the first quarter. The Friars closed the quarter with a 9-2 run to get within seven at the break (23-16).

Providence cut the Pioneers' lead to one on three occasions in the second quarter as Jovana Nogic (Belgrade, Serbia) drained four three-pointers. Her last three came with just under four minutes remaining on the clock to get the Friars within 29-28. Sacred Heart pushed its lead to five with 45 seconds remaining on a 6-2 scoring advantage, but Clara Che (Valencia, Spain) hit a three with 38-seconds on the clock to make it a two-point game at halftime (35-33).

Nogic led the Friars with 15 first-half points, including 12 in the second quarter. Erin Storck and Tykera Carter combined to score 26 of Sacred Heart's 35 points in the opening 20 minutes.

Providence took its first lead of the game (44-42) with just over five minutes to play in the third quarter as Che hit a pull-up jumper on the right baseline. The Friars led by as many as four (52-48), but Sacred Heart responded by taking a 59-58 advantage heading into the final 10 minutes. Ny'Dajah Jackson (Oakland, Calif.) spearheaded the Friars' run in the third with seven points on 3-3 shooting from the field and added four rebounds and one assist.

The fourth quarter featured seven lead changes and three ties. Sacred Heart started off the action with a 5-0 run to take a 64-58 lead with 8:23 on the clock. Providence answered with a 9-0 spurt to regain the lead for the first time in the fourth quarter (67-64), with just under five and a half minutes to play. The lead changed hands five more times in the game.

Providence held a 75-72 edge with 1:43 on the clock, but the Friars went 0-5 from the field down the stretch and committed an untimely turnover with 11 seconds to play and just a one-point deficit (76-75).

Sacred Heart converted a pair of free throws to make it a three-point lead (78-75) with 10-seconds left and held on for the win. Providence's three attempts from three-point territory to close the game were off the mark.

Nogic finished the day with 24 points, five rebounds, two assists and one steal. Che completed the game with 12 points, five rebounds, four assists and one steal. Jackson notched 11 points on 5-5 shooting from the field, eight rebounds and three assists.

Storck led Sacred Heart with a game-high 29 points, while Katherine Haines chipped in a double-double on 12 points and 12 rebounds. Carter and Candice Leatherwood added 16 points and 14 points, respectively.

The Friars return to action on Thursday, Dec. 21 against Boston College at 12:00 p.m. in Providence, R.I. The game will be televised locally on YurView (Cox channel 4 & 1004).
