Women's Basketball Falls to Arizona State, 67-58

    Providence, R.I. - The Providence College women's basketball team welcomed Arizona State to Alumni Hall in Providence, R.I. on Friday, December 7. The Friars dropped a hard-fought battle to teh Sun Devils, 67-58.

    The Friars went on a 7-0 run early in the first half to take a 7-3 lead at the 15:58 mark. The Sun Devils answered to tie the game, 7-7, but the Friars would regain the lead (9-7) at the 14:36 mark. Providence would remain in front until 3:53 remained on the clock, when the Sun Devils earned a 20-18 advantage. ASU took its largest lead of the half (28-23) with 1:12 on the clock and took a 30-26 lead into halftime.

    Arizona State outscored Providence, 37-30, in the second half. The Sun Devils' largest lead came with 42 seconds remaining in regulation (67-56). Providence would get within two points of Arizona State at 3:34 when sophomore guard Danielle Pearson (Brooklyn, N.Y.) finished a drive to the basket to make the score 56-54.

    Micaela Pickens recorded 15 points in the match-up and finished 4-8 (50 percent) from behind the arc. As a team the Sun Devils shot 22-55 (40 percent) from the field, including 7-20 (35 percent) from three-point territory. Janae Fulcher and Jade Blackwell also finished in double figures for the Sun Devils with 13 and 14 points, respectively.

    Providence and Arizona State combined for 47 turnovers, with 32 coming in the first half. The Friars finished with 24 turnovers and the Sun Devils ended with 23. The Friars scored 21 points off of ASU's miscues.

    Providence shot 23-49 from the field (46.9 percent), including 4-8 (50 percent) beyond the three-point arc. Senior guard Symone Roberts (New Britain, Conn.) finished with 23 points to notch her team-best seventh double-digit scoring game of the season. Her performance against the Sun Devils also marked her third 20+ point game of the year. Roberts converted on all three of her three-point attempts.

     

     

    Sophomore guard Tori Rule (Minneapolis, Minn.) also finished in double figures, with 11 points. Rule's 11 points marked her sixth game in double-digits this season.

    Providence returns to action on Saturday, December 19 when it travels to Myrtle Beach, S.C. to take on Clemson. Tip-off at the Myrtle Beach Convention Center is scheduled for 9:00 p.m.
