Women's Basketball Falls Short In BIG EAST Opener To Villanova, 69-42

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College women's basketball team fell to Villanova, 69-42, in the BIG EAST opener for both teams on December 7 in Providence, R.I. Villanova improves to 7-2 overall and 1-0 in the BIG EAST. The Friars fall to 4-5 overall on the year and 0-1 in the league.

Providence was led by senior Teya Wright (Paterson, N.J.), who recorded her seventh double-double of the season with 17 points and 14 rebounds. Ten of Wright's rebounds came off the offensive glass. She hit 8-of-14 field-goal attempts in the game and matched her career high of four steals in 31 minutes of action.

The Wildcats were led by Laura Sweeney's game-high 25 points and 13 rebounds. Sweeney shot 10-of-15 from the floor, including 1-of-3 from three-point territory. Rachel Roberts contributed 14 points in the victory, dished two assists and collected four steals.

Providence struggled from the field, shooting 31.1-percent (19-61), compared to the Wildcats' 48.1-percent (25-52). Providence out-rebounded Villanova, 38-35.

The Friars return to action on Friday, December 9 against the University of Massachusetts. The game will be played at the Mullins Center in Amherst, Mass. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. The Friars' next home game is scheduled for Monday, December 19 against Delaware at 7:00 p.m. The game will be televised live by Cox Sports (Cox 3).
