Women's Hoops Defeats UMass Lowell, 66-54

PROVIDENCE, R.I. -

The Providence College women's basketball team topped UMass Lowell, 66-54, on Saturday, Dec. 6 at Alumni Hall in Providence, R.I. Sophomore guard Sarah Beal (Matthews, N.C.) led the Friar effort with a team-high 17 points, five assists and five steals.

Providence jumped out to an early 13-7 lead over the River Hawks (14:27). With 3:56 remaining the Friars held a one point lead. From that point, the Friars closed the half on an 11-5 run and carried a 35-28 lead into the break to mark Providence's first, halftime lead of the season.

Sophomore guard Sarah Beal (Matthews, N.C.) paced the Friar offense through the first 20 minutes with eight points and three assists. Beal anchored the Friar defense with three first half steals, while senior Alexis Harris (Detroit, Mich.) registered two blocks. Providence generated 14 of its 35 points off of River Hawk turnovers.

The Friars extended their lead to as many as 13 points, 50-37, in the second half and held the edge for the remainder of the game. Shannon Samuels notched 17 second-half points to help pull the River Hawks pulled within one point, 53-52, but that was as close as they would get (6:07).

Junior Evi Iiskola (Espoo, Finland) and freshman Allegra Botteghi (Bologna, Italy) joined Beal in double figures with 14 and 11 points, respectively.

Providence held the advantage on the boards, 41-27, including a 20-5 edge on the offensive glass. Senior Chanise Baldwin (Pontiac, Mich.) hauled in a career and game-high 15 boards and finished with nine points. Eight of Baldwin's 15 boards came off of the offensive glass and she also dished a career-best four assists. Harris added 10 boards and eight points.

 

 

The Friars will return to action on Sunday, Dec. 7 when Providence plays host to the University of Rhode Island. Tip-off at Mullaney Gymnasium is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
