Women's Basketball Falls To Brown In Ocean State Tip-Off Championship Game, 77-70

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College women's basketball team fell to Brown, 77-70, on Dec. 4 in the championship game of the Ocean State Tip-Off Tournament in Providence, R.I. Sophomore Jovana `Yoyo' Nogic (Lisbon, Portugal) led the Friars with a game-high 22 points in the effort. Providence dropped to 7-1 overall on the year, while Brown improved to 5-3.

The Friars trailed 12-6 with 5:25 on the clock in the first quarter, but Providence closed the quarter with a 16-2 run to take a 22-14 lead.

Brown started the second quarter on a 9-0 run to take a 23-22 lead with 5:42 on the clock. Sophomore Maddie Jolin (Rehoboth, Mass.) halted the run with a three-point bucket from the right wing, but the Bears finished the quarter with an 11-4 scoring advantage. Brown outscored Providence 20-7 overall in the second frame and took a 34-29 lead into halftime.

Jolin and fellow sophomore Nogic combined to score 23 of the Friars' 29 first-half points. Jolin tallied 12 points on 4-5 shooting from the field, including a 3-4 effort from three-point territory. Nogic collected 11 points on 5-7 shooting.

Brown got out to a nine-point lead (44-35) with 5:13 on the clock in the third quarter, but a quick 6-0 spurt by PC got the Friars within three (44-39) with 3:35 on the clock. Providence stayed within striking distance and trailed 51-49 heading into the fourth quarter.

Providence took a 52-51 lead with 8:04 remaining in regulation. Brown responded with a three-pointer on the other end to retake the lead, which it would not relinquish the rest of the way. Providence pulled within one (60-59) with 4:01 left in the game, but Taylor Will converted a traditional three-point play on the other end of the floor to help Brown maintain control.

Jolin joined Nogic in double figures with 18 points and junior Allegra Botteghi (Bologna, Italy) added 10 points and eight rebounds. Sophomore Clara Che (Valencia, Spain) added nine points, five assists and a career-high five steals.

Nogic and Che were each named to the All-Tournament Team at the conclusion of play.

The Friars return to action on Wednesday, Dec. 7 against Columbia. The game will be played at Levien Gymnasium in New York, N.Y., and is scheduled to tip-off at 7:00 p.m. It marks the sixth game in an eight-game road swing for the Friars, who return to Alumni Hall for their next home game on Wednesday, Dec. 28 against BIG EAST foe Xavier at 7:00 p.m.
