Women's Basketball Falls To Florida, 73-56

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College women's basketball women's basketball team fell to Florida, 73-56, in the second game of the Brown BEAR Classic on December 4. The game was played at the Pizzitola Sports Center on the campus of Brown University in Providence, R.I.

With the game tied 14-14 in the first half, the Gators scored eight-straight points to take a 22-14 lead with 7:28 on the clock. Freshman Lauren Okafor (New Haven, Conn.) stopped the run with a lay-up for the Friars at the 7:05 mark to make the score 22-16. Florida closed the half with a 17-10 scoring advantage. The Friars were limited to just two points in the final 2:10 of the opening half via a pair of Okafor free throws with two seconds remaining.

The Gators took a 39-26 lead into the break. Eight Friars cracked the scoring column, led by Okafor, with six points. Jordan Jones paced Florida in the opening half with 12 points on 5-of-7 shooting, including 2-of-3 from three-point range.

Florida raced out to a 20-point lead (48-28) in the second half with 13:41 left to play. During the first 6:19 of play, the Friars scored just one basket, which was a Rachel Barnes' (Windsor, Conn.) lay-up at 18:15. Providence responded with a 9-2 run to get within 50-37, with 10-10 remaining. The Gators went on a 6-0 run to go back ahead by 19 with 7:29 on the clock, but Providence's Miranda Tate (Bolingbrook, Ill.) hit back-to-back three pointers and limited Florida to a lay-up to make the score 58-43.

Providence cut the lead to 12 (58-46) as junior Chandler McCabe (Winter Park, Fla.) hit a three point basket at the 4:57 mark. After exchanging baskets, the Friars found themselves within 11 (62-51) with 3:18 to play. It proved to be as close as Providence would get the rest of the way.



Tate was the lone Friar in double digits with 11 points. Barnes connected for nine points, while freshmen Danielle Pearson (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and Okafor each added eight.

Jones finished the day with a game-high 19 points for Florida. Ndidi Madu posted a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds.

The Friars open BIG EAST Conference play on Wednesday, December 8 against No. 16/16 Notre Dame. The game is scheduled to be played at Alumni Hall/Mullaney Gymnasium in Providence, R.I. Tip-off is slated for 7:00 p.m.
