The Providence College women's basketball team fell to Sacred Heart, 76-69, on December 1 at William H. Pitt Center in Fairfield, Conn. Amanda Pape and Kaitlin Sowinski combined to score 48 of the Pioneers 76 points on the night. Pape tallied 25, while Sowinski knocked down 23. Shauna Snyder (Albuquerque, N.M.) scored a team-high 21 points for Providence.
In the first half, Sacred Heart jumped out to a 6-0 lead before the Friars were able to get on the board with their first basket at the 17:35 mark. The Friars didn't gain their first lead until 2:32 remained in the half. Freshman Kendria Holmes (Charlotte, N.C.) knocked down a short jumper to give PC the 32-31 lead. Holmes finished the half with eight points. Snyder tallied a team-best nine points in the opening 20 minutes. Pape registered 13 points for Sacred Heart in the first half. Sowinski netted 10 points for the Pioneers. Providence held a 34-32 lead at halftime. In the second half, Sacred Heart outscored Providence, 44-35, to take the 76-69 victory.
Sacred Heart scored 26 points off of a season high 22 Providence turnovers. The Pioneers also connected on 19-of-32 free-throws compared to PC's six-of-eight shooting from the foul line.
Chelsea Marandola connected on 17 points for PC in the loss. Sacred Heart's Pape pulled down a game-high 14 rebounds for a double-double. Pape also added nine steals.
Providence (7-2) returns to action on Tuesday, December 5 when it plays host to BIG EAST Conference foe Seton Hall. The game will be played at Alumni Hall/Mullaney Gymnasium in Providence, R.I. at 7:00 p.m.
