WILMINGTON, N.C. - The Providence College women's basketball team defeated UNCW, 65-49, on Nov. 26 in the opening game of the UNCW Hampton Inn Thanksgiving Classic in Wilmington, N.C. Senior Sarah Beal (Matthews, N.C.) and sophomore Maddie Jolin (Rehoboth, Mass) each recorded a game-high 17 points in the victory, as the Friars improved to 5-0 to start the season.

The Friars trailed 14-11 after the first quarter, but took control of the game with a 14-0 scoring advantage to start the second quarter. Sophomore Maddie Jolin (Rehoboth, Mass.) hit back-to-back three-pointers in the first 1:09 of the quarter, giving the Friars a 17-10 lead with 8:51 on the clock, and PC didn't let off the gas. Providence led by as many as 14 with 26-seconds left on the clock, but UNCW hit a three pointer to cut the deficit to 11 (32-21) heading into halftime.

The Seahawks got as close at eight (38-30) with 5:20 remaining in the third, but Providence answered with back-to-back buckets by Jovana `Yoyo' Nogic (Lisbon, Portugal) and Allegra Botteghi (Bologna, Italy), to get the lead back to double figures, where it remained for the rest of the game.

Beal, who was playing in her home State of North Carolina, shot 8-13 from the field. Jolin was even more efficient with her shooting touch, hitting 6-8 attempts from the floor overall, including 5-6 from three-point range.

Nogic completed the game with nine points, two rebounds and one assist. Botteghi finished the day with eight points and a game-high seven rebounds. Sophomore Clara Che (Valencia, Spain) dished a team-high three assists and added four rebounds.

For the game, Providence shot 52.7-percent from the field (29-55), including 50-percent from beyond the three-point arc (7-14). The Friars have shot 45-percent or better from the field in each of their five games this season, including three games over 50-percent.

The Friars (5-0) are off to their best start since the 2006-07 season when the team began the year with six-consecutive victories.

Providence will conclude play at the UNCW Hampton Inn Thanksgiving Classic on Sunday, Nov. 27 against Miami (OH). Tip-off is slated for Noon at Trask Coliseum in Wilmington, N.C. Earlier in the day, Miami fell to La Salle, 79-70, and will enter Sunday's game with a 2-3 overall record.
