Women's Hoops Opens Savannah Invitational With 78-48 Win Over Savannah State

SAVANNAH, Ga. - The Providence College women’s basketball team defeated Savannah State, 78-48, on the opening day of the Savannah Invitational on Nov. 21 in Savannah, Ga. Junior Jovana Nogic (Belgrade, Serbia) scored a team-high 24 points on 8-17 shooting from the field, including a 7-14 performance from three-point territory. Overall, 10 Friars cracked the scoring column and combined for 20 assists on 30 made buckets.

The two teams played to an 18-18 tie through the first quarter, but Providence opened up the game with a 24-4 scoring advantage in the second quarter to take a 42-22 lead at halftime.

The Friars’ maintained control the game the rest of the way. The lead ballooned to 31 (58-27) with 3:05 left in the third quarter, and led by as many as 33 (76-43) with 4:36 left in regulation.

Providence shot an impressive 52.6-percent from the field (30-57), including a 60-percent clip from beyond the three-point arc (15-25). Nogic matched her career high with her seven triples, while fellow classmate Clara Che (Valencia, Spain) set a career-best with five three-point buckets on five attempts (5-5). Che finished with 15 points and junior Maddie Jolin (Rehoboth, Mass.) rounded out the double-digit scorers as she added 13 points on 5-7 shooting (3-5, 3pt FGs).

Sophomore Ny’Dajah Jackson (Oakland, Calif.) led the Friars on the glass with a season-high nine rebounds. She also chipped in four points, three assists and one steal.

Five Friars finished with three-or-more assists, including senior Allegra Botteghi (Bologna, Italy), who dished a career-high four dimes.



The Friars’ 15 three-point buckets are the most in a single game since Nov. 12, 2013, when the team hit 17-33 against Bryant. Additionally, Providence’s 20 assists in the game are the most since Feb. 21, 2016. On that day, the Friars also dished 20 dimes in a match-up against Marquette.

The Friars return to action for their second game of the Savannah Invitational on Wednesday, Nov. 22 against Wright State. Tip-off is slated for 4:30 p.m.
