Women's Basketball Defeats George Mason, 82-70, In Season Opener

PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- The Providence College Friars defeated the George Mason University Patriots 82-70, in women's college basketball action on Saturday, November 20 at PC's Alumni Hall. Providence junior Jen Gombotz (Southington, Conn.) scored a game-high 28 points, and grabbed 11 rebounds, to lead the Friar offense.

The two teams battled for the first ten minutes, then Providence used an 11-2 run, to open up a seven point lead with four minutes to play in the half. The teams traded hoops until the break, with the Friars taking 43-35 halftime lead. Gombotz registered 17 points to lead all scorers in the first half. Senior Trish Halpin led the Patriots with 10 first half points.

Providence started the second half strong, extending their lead 15 points with 15 minutes to play, and never looked back from there. Friar freshman guard Dee Cummings (Huntsville, Ala.) controlled the Providence offense all night, dishing out 15 assists, in her first collegiate game.

Junior Monika Roberts (Pittsburg, Calif) and sophomore Chrissy Vozab (Amenia, N.Y.) added 12 and 13 points, respectively.

The Patriots were led by a double-double from Haplin (18 points, 10 rebounds) and 16 points from junior Jen Surlas.

With the victory the Friars improve to 1-0, while George Mason drops to 0-1. Providence returns to action on Friday, November 26 at the University of Memphis at 6:00 p.m.
