MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. -- The Providence College women's basketball team opened the 2000-01 season with a 78-55 victory over Central Michigan in the first round of the 2000 Shearton Four Points Basketball Classic in Minneapolis, Minn. on Saturday, November 18. The win advances the Friars to the championship game against the University of Minnesota on Sunday at 4:00 p.m. (Eastern Standard Time).

The Friars (1-0 overall) were led by senior Jen Gombotz (Southington, Conn.), who led all scorers with 19 points in the win. She added six rebounds, an assist and a steal in 26 minutes.

Freshman Jenese Wilcox (Port Chester, N.Y.) recorded her first double-double in Providence's win, scoring 11 points and grabbing 12 rebounds. The 6-2 center also added two assists and two steals in 25 minutes.

The Friars led, 44-28, at the half and held Central Michigan to just eight-of-25 shooting in the first half (32 percent). PC increased the defensive pressure in the second half, limiting the Chippewas (0-1) to just 19 percent shooting from the floor (seven-of-37).
