PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College women's basketball team fell to Sacred Heart, 65-49, in it's 2005-06 season opener on Friday, November 18 at Alumni Hall/Mullaney Gymnasium in Providence, R.I. Junior Shauna Snyder (Albuquerque, N.M.) hit for a game-high 18 points in the loss. PC fifth-year senior Gayle Nwafili (Maplewood, N.J.) missed the 2004-05 season with an injury, but returned to the court against the Pioneers and registered a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds. Nwafili also added a team-high four assists and two blocked shots.

Sacred Heart (1-0) was led offensively by Jasmine Walker, who netted 17 points on seven-of-11 shooting from the field. Amanda Pape added 15 points and a team-high seven rebounds. Nicolle Rubino scored 13 points.

Joining Snyder and Nwafili in double figures for Providence was junior Kristina Baugh (Boston, Mass.) with 11 points. Rhode Island native Chelsea Marandola (Johnston, R.I.) recorded three assists, three steals and three rebounds in her collegiate debut.

The Friars shot a dismal 20-percent from the field in the first half, connecting on just six-of-30 attempts from the field. PC trailed Sacred Heart 27-18 at the half. Providence improved it's shooting in the second half (42.9 percent), connecting on 12-of-28 attempts from the floor and finished at 31-percent for the game (18-58).

Providence College (0-1) returns to action against Yale University on Monday, November 21 in a non-conference match-up. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. at PC's Alumni Hall/Mullaney Gymnasium in Providence, R.I.
