PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College women's basketball team defeated the University of Rhode Island, 71-40, on November 17 at Alumni Hall in Providence, R.I. Senior Mi-Khida Hankins (Baltimore, Md.) led all scorers with 16 points and added nine rebounds and three blocked shots, while senior Teya Wright (Paterson, N.J.) paced the Friars on the glass with 12 rebounds.

Providence took its first lead of the game (4-2) at the 16:04 mark of the first half and never relinquished it. The Rams kept it close the majority of the opening 20 minutes, until the Friars took a 10-point margin (30-20) in the locker room. It was the Friars' largest lead to that point.

PC opened the second half with a 25-4 scoring advantage to break the game open and gave Providence a 31-point lead (55-24) with 11:32 to play.

Joining Hankins in double figures was sophomore Symone Roberts (New Britain, Conn.) and junior Lola Wells (Fontana, Calif.), who netted 15 points and 11 points, respectively. Wells posted nine of her 11 points in the second half. Freshman Lauren Okafor tallied nine points and a season best 11 rebounds, narrowly missing a double-double for the second-straight game. Roberts also recorded a game-high five assists and five steals.

Providence dominated the glass with a decisive 57-31 advantage. The Friars' 57 rebounds are the most in a single game since December 20, 2000, when the squad hauled in 57 boards against Holy Cross. Twenty-eight of Providence's 57 rebounds against the Rams came off of the offensive glass.

PC's 57 rebounds versus Rhode Island were just six shy of tying the program's all-time single game record of 63, set on December 28, 1980 against Long Island.

Rhode Island was paced by Megan Shoniker's 14 points. Lara Gaspar contributed eight points and a team-best eight rebounds.

Providence College returns to action on Saturday, November 20 against Hartford in West Hartford, Conn. Tip-off is slated for 2:00 p.m.
