Women's Basketball Falls To Virginia In Home Opener, 55-38

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College women's basketball team fell to Virginia, 55-38, on November 14 at Alumni Hall/Mullaney Gymnasium in Providence, R.I. Virginia improves to 2-0 on the season, while the Friars drop to 0-2.

Virginia hit a three-point bucket just 20 seconds into the game and never relinquished the lead. The Cavaliers led by as many as 16 in the half, and took a 30-18 advantage into the locker room at halftime.

In the second half, the Friars cut Virginia's lead to seven (38-31) on a 13-8 run with 14:08 remaining. It proved to be as close as Providence could get down the stretch. The Cavaliers closed out the game on a 17-7 scoring advantage.

Senior Teya Wright (Paterson, N.J.) and junior Symone Roberts(New Britain, Conn.) each recorded 10 points for the Friars. Roberts led the team in rebounding with six boards, while Wright hauled in five.

Virginia was led offensively by Simone Egwu's 12 points and Jazmin Pitts recorded 10. Chelsea Shine narrowly missed a double-double with eight points and a game-high 10 rebounds.

The Cavaliers enjoyed a 43-36 edge in rebounding.

Providence returns to action on Wednesday, November 16 against Rhode Island. The game will be played at the Ryan Center in Kingston, R.I. at 7:00 p.m.
