Women's Basketball Defeats Massachusetts, 71-48

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Junior guard Miranda Tate (Bolingbrook, Ill.) led all scorers with 15 points to help the Providence College women's basketball team defeat Massachusetts, 71-48, on November 14 in Providence, R.I. The Friars improve to 1-1 on the year, while UMass drops to 0-2.

The Friars hit the first bucket of the game just 1:15 into the action and never looked back. The squad took a 15 point lead into the locker room at halftime (29-14), as it held the Minutewomen to 14.3-percent shooting from the floor (4-28). Senior forward Mi-Khida Hankins (Baltimore, Md.) led the Friar offense in the first half with six points.

Providence took its largest lead of the afternoon (62-35) with 6:06 remaining, as Tate hit her fourth three-point bucket of the afternoon. She scored 10 of her game-high 15 points in the second half. She also recorded four rebounds, three assists and one steal.

Joining Tate in double figures was sophomore guard Symone Roberts (New Britain, Conn.) and junior Rachel Barnes (Windsor, Conn.), with 13 points and 11 points, respectively. Roberts also dished a game-high four assists, while Barnes added seven rebounds, three assists and two steals.

Hankins finished with eight points and a game-high nine rebounds. Freshman forward Lauren Okafor (New Haven, Conn.) gave the Friars some good minutes off the bench with eight points, eight rebounds and two blocked shots.

Talen Watson led Massachusetts in the scoring column with 11 points. Cerie Mosgrove chipped in 10 points and added a team-best six rebounds.

Providence won the battle of the boards, 51-42. The Friars also recorded eight blocked shots on the afternoon.

Providence College returns to action on Wednesday, November 17 against in-state rival Rhode Island. The game will be played at Alumni Hall/Mullaney Gymnasium in Providence, R.I.
