PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College women's basketball team defeated Brown, 62-39, in non-conference action on November 14 at Alumni Hall/Mullaney Gymnasium in Providence, R.I. The game marked the season opener for both teams.

Sophomore Mi-Khida Hankins (Baltimore, Md.) and senior Chelsea Marandola (Johnston, R.I.) combined for 34 points to lead the Friar offense. Hankins posted 18 points, four assists, four rebounds, two steals and one blocked shot in 32 minutes of action. Marandola returned to the hardwoods for her first game action since the 2006-07 season and recorded 16 points, five rebounds, four steals and two assists and two blocked shots. She played all but two minutes in the game. Senior Shantee Darrian (Trenton, N.J.) was one point and one rebound shy of a double-double, after finishing the night with nine points and nine rebounds

The Friars started the game off slowly, shooting just 7-25 (.280) from the field in the first half, and went to the locker room with a 25-12 lead at halftime. Providence shot 50-percent (13-26) from the floor in the second half and outscored Brown, 37-27, in the final 20 minutes en route to the 62-39 victory.

Karly Grace led the Bears with nine points and two steals. Sarah Delk pulled down a team-high six rebounds. Courtney Lee dished out a team-high three assists.

Providence (1-0) returns to action on Tuesday, November 18 against Hartford. The game will be played in West Hartford, Conn. at 7:00 p.m. It marks the first of six-straight games the Providence will play on the road. The next home game for the Friars is scheduled for Saturday, December 6 against Harvard.
