Women's Basketball Drops Season Opener To Saint Joseph's, 64-49

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - The Saint Joseph's Hawks defeated the Providence College Friars, 64-49, in non-conference women's basketball action on November 12 at Hagan Arena in Philadelphia, Pa. Providence was led by senior forward Teya Wright (Paterson, N.J.), who posted a double-double on 12 points and 10 rebounds. Senior forward Mi-Khida Hankins (Baltimore, Md.) also scored 12 points for the Friars. The Hawks were led by Michelle Baker's game-high 16 points.

The Hawks took a 30-23 lead into the locker room at halftime behind the strength of a 16-6 scoring run in the final 7:19 of play. Saint Joseph's was led offensively by Kelly Cavallo and Michelle Baker, who each contributed eight points. The Hawks also held a 21-15 advantage on the boards in the first half, as Cavallo hauled in six rebounds. Providence College senior forward Mi-Khida Hankins (Baltimore, Md.) posted eight first-half points for the Friars, while Wright grabbed a team-best four rebounds.

Saint Joseph's pushed out to a 15-point lead 6:50 into the second half of play and never looked back. Providence managed to cut the deficit to nine (55-46) with 6:06 remaining in the game, but the Hawks outscored the Friars 9-3 to close out the contest.

Junior Miranda Tate (Bolingbrook, Ill.) joined Wright and Hankins in double figures with 10 points. Sophomore Symone Roberts (New Britain, Conn.) came off the bench to dish a game-high seven assists and added seven points.

The Friars will host the University of Massachusetts in their home-opener on Sunday, November 14 at 2:00 p.m. The game will be played at Alumni Hall/Mullaney Gymnasium in Providence, R.I.
