Women's Basketball Defeats Nor'Easter Storm, 91-74

PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- The Providence College Friars defeated the Nor'Easter Storm, 91-74, in women's preseason college basketball action on Thursday, November 11 at PC's Alumni Hall. Providence senior Meghan Hinds (Perrysburg, Ohio) scored a game-high 19 points, including 13 in the second half, to lead the Friar offense.

The two teams entered halftime tied at 42-42. The Nor'Easter Storm used strong outside shooting (four of eight from three-point territory) and a perfect eight for eight from the free-throw line to keep pace with the Friars in the first 20 minutes of action. Dina Vernon, Erika Kienast and Tula Kofitsas each had six points for the Storm in the first half.

Junior Jen Gombotz (Southington, Conn.) registered nine points to lead all Friars in the first half. Sophomore Catrina Hawley-Stewart (West Haven, Conn.) also had a strong first half for PC, grabbing nine rebounds and scoring eight points.

Junior Monika Roberts (Pittsburg, Calif.) scored on a hook shot to open the second half and the Friars never looked back. PC's lead got as large as 19 points when the Friars finished off a 10-2 run with 1:50 remaining.

Roberts (14 points, 10 rebounds) and Stewart (10 points, 14 rebounds) each recorded a double-double for the Friars.

Kienast recorded 16 points and 16 rebounds to lead the Nor'Easter Storm.

Providence returns to action on Saturday, November 20 when the Friars open the season against George Mason at 7:00 p.m. at Alumni Hall.
