Providence Women's Basketball Defeats Bryant, 57-49, In Exhibition Opener

PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- The Providence College women's basketball season opened its 2000-2001 exhibition schedule with a win over Division II Bryant College on Saturday afternoon, 57-49, at Alumni Hall in Providence, R.I.

Senior forward Jen Gombotz (Southington, Conn.) led the Friars with 15 points in the win, and added six steals, an assist and blocked shot. Freshman forward chipped in with 12 points, 10 rebounds, two blocked shots and two steals in her Providence College debut.

The Friars led at the halftime break, 28-20, after Bryant rallied to close the half. Providence led by as much as 25-8 with 5:36 left in the half . The Bulldogs closed the half with a five-minute, 12-3 run.

The Friars opened up as much as a 12-point lead in the second half, but could not put away Bryant. A foul-line jumper by Bryant's Lindsay Hermann tied the contest at 44 with 3:44 left to play. Providence scored 13 of the final 18 points to win the game, 57-49, though.

Bryant College was led by senior center Stephanie Tobey, who totalled 16 points in the loss.

Providence closes their exhibition slate with a contest against a Swedish team on Friday, November 10th at 7:00 p.m. at Alumni Hall.
