Women's Hoops Defeats RIC In Exhibition Play, 83-37

    The Providence College women's basketball team defeated Rhode Island College, 83-37, in an exhibition game on Saturday, November 3 at Alumni Hall in Providence, R.I. Senior forward Brianna Edwards (Minneapolis, Minn.) led the way for the Friars, as she posted a double-double with 26 points and 13 rebounds.

    Providence started the game on a 9-0 run, but the Anchorwomen answered with a 13-3 run to take a 13-12 advantage at the 13:18 mark. It proved to be RIC's only lead of the game as the Friars closed out the half with a 28-7 edge in scoring. Providence took a 40-20 lead into the locker room at the break.

    Edwards paced the Friars with 15 points in the opening 20 minutes of play and joined freshman Evi Iiskola (Espoo, Finland) with a team-best six rebounds apiece.

    In the second half, Providence out-scored the Anchorwomen, 43-17, to earn the decisive victory.

    Joining Edwards in double figures for the Friars were Symone Roberts (New Britain, Conn.) and Tori Rule (Minneapolis, Minn.). Roberts tallied 18 points and added four rebounds, three assists and two steals. Rule finished the game with 12 points, including 10 in the second half. Sophomore Chanise Baldwin (Pontiac, Mich.) narrowly missed a double-double with nine points and 10 boards.

    Providence shot 46.7-percent (35-75) from the field in the game, while limiting RIC to 30.4-percent (14-46). The Friars also hit 13-19 attempts from the charity stripe (.684), and dominated the glass with a 52-26 edge in rebounding. Twenty-five of the Friars' 52 boards came off the offensive glass.

    Providence opens the regular-season schedule on Friday, November 9 against Drexel University at 7:00 p.m. At halftime, the Athletic Department will hold a ribbon cutting ceremony to celebrate the grand re-opening of Alumni Hall.
