Women's Basketball Defeats Assumption College In Exhibition Game, 73-49

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College women's basketball team topped Assumption College, 73-49, in an exhibition game on Saturday, October 26 at Alumni Hall/Mullaney Gymnasium in Providence, R.I. Junior Alexis Harris(Detroit, Mich.) led the Friars with a double-double on 19 points and 11 rebounds.

With 12:43 left to play in the first half, the Friars trailed the Greyhounds, 15-8. Providence then went on a 12-0 run to take to a 20-15 lead (8:30). The 12-0 run marked the beginning of Providence's 28-12 run to close the half, and the Friars held a 36-27 advantage at the break. Harris secured her double-double in the first half with 14 points and 10 rebounds. She shot an impressive 7-for-10 from the field.

Providence opened the second half on a 10-0 run to take a 19-point lead (46-27) with 15:24 remaining on the clock. Providence pushed its lead to as many as 24 (67-43) with 5:00 minutes to play, and maintained a comfortable advantage down the stretch.

Junior Tori Rule (Minneapolis, Minn.) finished the day with 10 points, six rebounds, two assists and two steals in 29 minutes of action. Freshman Miranda Simpson (Round Rock, Texas) chipped in 10 points, six rebounds and four assists in 24 minutes off the bench. Sophomore Evi Iiskola (Espoo, Finland) added nine points, four rebounds, two assists and two steals. Senior Danielle Pearson(Brooklyn, N.Y.) dished a game-high six assists and recorded three steals.

Providence shot 43.9 percent from the field and finished 13-18 at the charity stripe. In addition, the Friars held the advantage on the boards, 44-39.



Head Coach Susan Robinson Fruchtland team captains Rule and Pearson honored Assumption College Head Coach Kerry Phayre during a pregame presentation. Phayre played for the Friars from 1980-83 and earned KODAK District I All-America honors. She currently ranks 12th all-time in career scoring (1,269 points) and fifth all-time in assists at the College, with 432

The Friars open the 2013-14 regular-season schedule on Saturday, November 9 against UMass Lowell. Tip-off is slated for 1:00 p.m. at the Costello Athletic Center in Lowell, Mass. The Friars' home opener is scheduled for Tuesday, November 12 against Bryant University. The game will be played at Alumni Hall/Mullaney Gymnasium at 7:00 p.m.
