Women's Basketball Falls To Marquette In BIG EAST First Round, 78-75

ROSEMONT, ILL. - The Providence College women's basketball team fell to Marquette, 78-75, in the first round of the BIG EAST Tournament on March 7 at Allstate Arena in Rosemont, Ill. Senior guard Tori Rule led all scorers with 30 points in the game on 12-26 shooting from the field and added five rebounds, three assists and one steal.

The Friars trailed by as many as nine (31-22) with 6:46 remaining in the first half, but closed play with a 22-11 scoring advantage to take a 44-42 lead at halftime. Rule led all scorers with 17 points on 7-13 shooting from the field, including 3-5 from three-point territory. Providence was 7-7 from the field in the final 4:30 of the opening half, which included nine points from Rule. The Friars' 44 points marks a season high for first-half scoring.

Providence pushed its lead to nine (53-44) after opening the second half on a 9-2 run with 16:48 to play. Marquette cut the deficit to one on two occasions, but the Friars held their ground each time. Providence held a six-point advantage (73-67) with 5:35 left in the game, but Marquette out-scored the Friars 11-2 down the stretch to steal the victory.

The game was tied, 75-75, with 23 seconds left on the clock. Marquette's Kenisha Bell hit one of two attempts at the free throw line to give the Golden Eagle's their first lead the 3:19 mark of the first half. Chanise Baldwin got the defensive rebound off Bell's miss on the second attempt and the Friars called a time out with 9-seconds left. Senior Karin Robinson took the ball the length of the floor, but her attempt at the rim was blocked by Chelsie Butler, who also secured the rebound and was fouled. Butler went to the line at the other end and put the game away with two makes. Rule heaved a desperation, half-court shot with one second left, but it was off the mark.



Alexis Harris joined Rule in double figures with 14 points and added six boards and two assists. Alison Lewis netted 12 points and dished two assists. Rule's 30-point effort was fourth of her career, and second during BIG EAST Tournament play.

Marquette was led by Bell's 21 points, while Butler and Arlesia Morse finished the day with 17 and 16 points, respectively.

Providence concludes the season with a 6-24 overall record, while Marquette improves to 9-21. The Golden Eagles will face top-seeded Seton Hall in the quarterfinals on Sunday.
