HARTFORD, CONN -The Providence College women’s basketball team fell to the West Virginia Mountaineers, 53-48 in BIG EAST Tournament action at the XL Center in Hartford, Connecticut on March 6. The Friars conclude their season with the loss, while WVU moves on to play DePaul in the second round of the tournament. PC finishes their season with a 10-20 (4-13 BIG EAST) record, while the Mountaineers improve to 17-13 (6-1 BIG EAST).
The 14th seeded Friars took a 30-24 lead into the halftime break led by senior Catherine Bove (Cincinnati, Ohio) who scored nine first half points. Sophomore Mi-Khida Hankins (Baltimore, Md.) also chipped in eight points in the opening stanza.
The 11th seeded Mountaineers bounced back in the second half, going on a 7-0 run to open the period. Providence reclaimed the lead, 35-34 at 13:37 on a Chelsea Marandola (Johnston, R.I.) three pointer. The Friars then failed to score for almost ten minutes before Marandola hit two free throws at the 3:55 mark. West Virginia continued to build their lead, growing to as much as nine with 2:06 left. Jessica Clark (Bronx, N.Y.) hit a layup at the 1:01 mark which started a mini run for the Friars, who then cut the lead down to four at 50-46 with 0:27 on the clock. Providence would be unable to get any closer.
Marandola paced the Friars with 12 points. Hankins finished the day with 10 points and eight rebounds. West Virginia was led by Takisha Granberry who scored 19 points.
