Women's Basketball Defeated By Butler, 73-67, In BIG EAST Tournament

CHICAGO, Ill. - The Providence College women’s basketball team was defeated by Butler, 73-67, in overtime in its opening round game of the BIG EAST Tournament on Saturday, March 3 in Chicago, Ill. The Friars, who end the season with a 10-21 mark, were led on offense by Jovana Nogic, who recorded 16 points and five rebounds in 33 minutes of action.

The Friars entered the 2018 BIG EAST Tournament as a No. 9 seed. The matchup against the No. 8 seed Butler Bulldogs marked the first time the two teams competed at the BIG EAST Tournament.

The Friars jumped out early and carried the play trough the first 20 minutes. The Friars led 34-30 after shooting 14-22 (64 percent) through the first two quarters. PC also connected on 3 of 7 shots from beyond the arc. Butler shot just 36 percent in the first two quarters of play.

Providence continued to hold the lead, 49-44, after three quarters of play. However in the fourth quarter, the Bulldogs forced a tie and the two teams ended regulation with the score knotted at 62-62.

The Bulldogs were able to pull away in five minute overtime, outscoring the Friars,11-5, to earn the 73-67 win.

The Friars finished the game shooting, 45 percent from the field (26-58), including 44 percent from three-point territory (8-18). Butler was 22-58 from the field.

In addition to Nogic’s 16 points, Maddie Jolin registered 14 points and Clara Che added 13 points for the Friars.

Whitney Jennings had a game-high 20 points to lead Butler (15-16).
