PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College women's basketball team defeated Pittsburgh, 91-77, in BIG EAST Conference action in Providence, R.I., to conclude the regular-season schedule.

Freshman Jessica Simmonds (South Orange, N.J.) recorded a career-high 19 points to lead a hot Providence offense that witnessed four other Friars score in double figures. Simmonds also pulled down seven rebounds. Sophomore Kristin Quinn (Sewell, N.J.) registered a season-high 17 points and nine rebounds. Graduate student Dani Trippany (Massena, N.Y.) and sophomore Ryann Kilgore (Belleville, Mich.) each scored 15 points, while Trippany added eight rebounds. Senior Catrina Hawley-Stewart (West Haven, Conn.) rounded out the Friars in double digits with 10 points.

For Pittsburgh, guard Laine Selwyn led all scorers with 32 points on eight-of-14 shooting from the field, and 16-of-17 shooting from the free-throw line. Brooke Stewart and Haley Harguth netted 11 points each for the Panthers.

Providence led, 50-37, at halftime to set the foundation for its highest point total of the season at the completion of the game (91 points). At the 16:51 mark of the second half, PC held it's largest lead of the game (19 points), 57-38.

Providence improves to 13-14 overall, and finishes eighth in the final BIG EAST standings with a 7-9 record. The Panthers end their season with a 8-19 overall record and a 3-13 mark in the BIG EAST. Providence will advance to the BIG EAST Conference Championship Tournament, in Piscataway, N.J., as the No. 8 seed in the 12-team tournament. The Friars will face No. 9 seed, Seton Hall at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 2, 2002. PC was picked to finish 11th in the 2001-02 BIG EAST Conference Preseason Poll, released on October 25, 2001.
