Women's Hoops Drops 70-43 Decision To Villanova

VILLANOVA, PA. - The Providence College women's basketball team fell to Villanova, 70-43, on Friday, Feb. 23 at Jake Nevin Field House in Villanova, Pa. The Friars dropped to 10-19 on the season (3-14 BIG EAST), while the Wildcats improved to 21-7 (11-6 BIG EAST).

Providence held a 13-9 lead with 3:35 remaining in the first quarter. Villanova closed the action with a 16-0 run to take a 25-13 lead into the break, including a three-quarter court shot by Jannah Tucker as time expired.

The Wildcats' run extended their run (23-0) into the second quarter to take a 32-13 lead and forced a Providence timeout. Freshman point guard Chanell Williams (Bronx, N.Y.) halted the run with a traditional three-point play for the Friars to cut Villanova's lead to 32-16. Villanova held an 18-6 scoring advantage during the second quarter overall and took a 43-19 lead into halftime.

The Friars out-scored the Wildcats, 16-12, in the third quarter, but the deficit was too large to overcome. Villanova finished the final 10 minutes with a 15-8 edge in the scoring column to take the decisive victory.

Freshman Andrea Cooper (Edmond, Okla.) narrowly missed her first career double-double with nine points and a career-best 10 rebounds to lead Providence. Williams also finished the evening with nine points, and dished a game-high four assists. The Friars' leading scorers Maddie Jolin (Rehoboth, Mass.) and Jovana Nogic (Belgrade, Serbia) were held to seven points each and combined to shoot 5-20 from the field.

Four Wildcats hit double figures in the scoring column, led by Kelly Jekot's 15 points. Mary Gedaka and Alex Louin each chipped in 13 points.

Providence College concludes its regular-season schedule on Sunday, Feb. 25 against Georgetown at McDonough Arena in Washington, D.C. Tip-off is slated for 2:00 p.m. and the game will be broadcast live on the BIG EAST Digital Network / FOX Sports Go.

The Friars will then move on to BIG EAST Tournament play, beginning Saturday, March 3 at Wintrust Arena in Chicago, Ill. Providence will enter the tournament as the No. 9 seed, and will face the No. 8 seed, which has not yet been determined. A full bracket will be released by the league office on Sunday, Feb. 25 upon completion of regular-season action.
