Women's Basketball Unable To Withstand Late Second-Half Rally By #24/22 Marquette

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College women's basketball team fell to No. 24/22 Marquette, 62-50, on February 22 at Alumni Hall in Providence, R.I. The Golden Eagles improve to 21-6 overall and 9-5 in the BIG EAST. Providence drops to 12-14 and 5-9 in league action.

The Friars controlled the game from the start and held a 48-46 lead with 6:24 to play on a Teya Wright (Paterson, N.J.) lay-up. However, Marquette would close the game on a 14-2 scoring run to take the win. Providence's points down the stretch came from the foul line, while missing its final eight shots from the field.

The Friars took a 32-31 lead into the locker room at halftime behind a 13-point effort from junior Miranda Tate (Bolingbrook, Ill.). Providence jumped out to a 14-2 lead as it capitalized on each of its first five shot attempts from the floor. Tate connected on 5-of-7 attempts from the floor in the half, including 3-of-3 shots beyond the three-point arc. The Friars led the entire first half, as Marquette managed to tie the game twice at 25-25 and 27-27. Tate broke the 27-27 tie with her third three-pointer at the 3:39 mark.

As a team, Providence shot 50.0-percent in the first half (14-28). Marquette connected on 45.0-percent of its opportunities from the floor (9-20). Despite having five fewer field goals than Providence, the Golden Eagles stayed in the game with a 12-of-12 shooting from the free-throw line. Providence was 0-2 from the charity stripe in the first half.

Providence shot 25.8-percent (8-31) from the field in the second half, while Marquette heated up to 52.4-percent (11-21). The Golden Eagles also held the advantage on the glass, 36-27.

Tate finished the game with a team-high 17 points, while senior Mi-Khida Hankins (Baltimore, Md.) checked in with 12 points. Wright hauled in a team-best seven rebounds and was hampered by foul trouble for much of the first half.

Paige Fiedorowicz recorded a double-double for Marquette on 20 points and 12 rebounds. Angel Robinson posted 15 points, while Jasmine Collins added 11.

Providence returns to action on Saturday, February 26 against Syracuse. The game will be played at the Carrier Dome in Syracuse, N.Y. Tip-off is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
