Women's Hoops Falls To Butler In BIG EAST Action, 69-48

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College women's basketball team fell to Butler, 69-48, on Feb. 16 in Providence, R.I. Butler improved to 14-14 overall (6-10 BIG EAST), while the Friars fell to 9-18 on the season (2-13 BIG EAST).

The Friars opened the game with back-to-back three-pointers to take a 6-0 lead with 7:51 on the clock. The Bulldogs tied the game twice over the next three minutes of action and took its first lead (11-10) with 3:51 left in the first quarter. The two teams traded baskets before Maddie Jolin (Rehoboth, Mass.) hit a three-pointer with four seconds remaining to give Providence a 15-13 lead at the break.

PC struggled from the field in the second quarter, hitting just 4-of-14 attempts from the floor (.286). Butler took advantage, hitting 9-of-17 attempts from the field (.529) and took a 12-point lead into the halftime (35-23).

Jovana Nogic (Belgrade, Serbia) opened the third quarter with a three pointer to get Providence within nine (35-26), but Butler responded with an 11-2 scoring run to take an 18-point lead (46-28) with 5:41 on the clock. Providence cut Butler's lead to 10 (48-38) with a 10-2 run. The Bulldogs led 49-38 heading into the final 10 minutes of play.

Kyra Spiwak (Arlington Heights, Ill.) hit a baseline jumper to start the fourth quarter, once again getting the Friars within nine points (49-40), but the Bulldogs put the game away with an 11-0 run to gain a 60-40 lead with 5:26 left in regulation.

Nogic was the only Friar to crack double figures in the scoring column, with 10 points. Andrea Cooper (Edmond, Okla.) and Clara Che (Valencia, Spain) each added eight points in the effort. Allegra Botteghi (Bologna, Italy) grabbed a team-high eight rebounds.

Michelle Weaver led four Bulldogs in double figures with 20 points, while Iman Lathan tallied a game-high 10 boards.

Providence College will host Xavier in its final regular-season home game of the year at Alumni Hall / Mullaney Gymnasium on Sunday, Feb. 18 at 1:00 p.m. Prior to the game, the program will honor its senior class, comprised of Brianna Frias and Allegra Botteghi, at approximately 12:45 p.m. The match-up will be broadcast live on the BIG EAST Digital Network (BEDN) via FOX Sports Go.
