PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Providence College women's basketball team fell to St. John's, 73-63, in BIG EAST action on February 16 at Alumni Hall/Mullaney Gymnasium in Providence, R.I. Three Friars reached double figures in the scoring column, led by sophomore guard Kendria Holmes (Charlotte, N.C.), who netted 16 points. Monique McLean led all scorers for St. John's in the victory with 23 points.

The Red Storm took a 35-23 lead into the locker room at halftime behind nine points from Kia Wright in the opening 20 minutes. Wright hit four of four shots from the floor, including one three point basket. Holmes and sophomore Emily Cournoyer (North Attleboro, Mass.) each scored eight points for PC in the first.

Providence started the second half on a 6-0 run to get within six (35-29) just 1:08 into the action. St. John's answered with an 11-6 run to get the lead back to 11 (46-35) with 14:55 on the clock. Providence then rallied to take the lead (49-48) with 11:02 remaining in the game after exploding on a 14-2 run. It proved to be the Friars final lead of the day, as St. John's closed out the game with a 25-14 scoring edge.

Junior Shantee Darrian (Trenton, N.J.) joined Holmes in double figures with 15 points. She also hauled in a game-high eight rebounds. Cournoyer completed the afternoon with 13 points and seven rebounds.

Kia Wright netted 16 points in the win for St. John's, while Tiina Sten contributed 12. Wright recorded game highs in assists (four) and steals (four).

 

 

Providence returns to action on Tuesday, Feburary 19 against Syracuse at 7:00 p.m. The game will be played at Alumni Hall/Mullaney Gymnasium in Providence, R.I.
