Providence Women's Basketball Falls To No. 2/2 Connecticut, 68-38

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College women's basketball team lost to No. 2/2 Connecticut 68-38 in BIG EAST Conference action on Saturday, Feb. 12 at Alumni Hall in Providence, R.I. The Friars falls to 11-12 on the season and 4-7 in the BIG EAST, while the Huskies improve to 24-1 overall and 12-0 in league action.

The Huskies raced out to a 27-6 lead midway through the first half, as Providence hit just three of its first15 shots on the offensive end. At the break, Connecticut held a 41-12 advantage while shooting 63.1-percent from the field (17-of-32), while Providence managed to convert just 5-of-27 field-goal attempts for 18.5-percent.

Six players scored for Connecticut in the opening 20 minutes, led by freshman Stefanie Dolson's 17 points. Senior Maya Moore registered nine points and six rebounds in the opening half. The Friars got six points from senior Mi-Khida Hankins (Baltimore, Md.) while freshman Alicia Cropper (Brooklyn, N.Y.) scored four.

Providence outscored Connecticut 12-11 in the first seven minutes of the second half, cutting the lead to 52-24. Connecticut only outscored the Friars by one in the second half, 27-26.

Senior Teya Wright (Paterson, N.J.) led the Friars with nine points, all of them coming in the second half. She also led the team in rebounding with 10.

Stefanie Dolson led all scores with 21 points for the Huskies. Moore finished the game with a season-low 11 points, along with a career-high nine assists and six rebounds.

The Friars finished the game shooting 28.1 percent on 16-of-57 attempts. UConn shot 52.9 percent on 27-of-51 attempts. The Huskies also held a 44-25 edge on the glass. PC had 16 turnovers and forced 20 by UConn.

The Friars return to action on Tuesday, Feb. 15, when they travel to face Pittsburgh. Tip-off is set for 7:05 p.m. and will be televised on CBS College Sports.
