PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College women's basketball team fell to USF on Saturday, February 10, 82-54, at Alumni Hall/Mullaney Gymnasium in Providence R.I. The Friars move to 7-16 (2-8 BIG EAST), while the Bulls improve to 16-6 (5-4 BIG EAST). Senior Symone Roberts(New Britain, Conn.) finished with 13 points and four assists. Eleven (11) of Roberts' 13 points came in the second half.
In the first half, the Bulls led by as many as seven (20-13) with 7:26 on the clock. Providence managed to cut the deficit to one (24-23) with 1:55 remaining in the half, but the Bulls closed held a 5-0 scoring edge down the stretch. USF held a 28-23 lead at halftime. Alisia Jenkins was the leading scorer in the first 20 minutes of play with 10 points, shooting 4-4 from the field and 2-4 from the charity stripe. Sophomore Alexis Harris(Detroit, Mich.) led the way for Providence with eight points and 10 rebounds.
Providence was within striking distance (33-31) with 16:54 on the clock in the second half. USF then exploded on a 30-8 run to give the Bulls a 63-39 advantage and control of the game with 9:17 remaining. The Bulls held their largest lead of the game at the 1:55 mark of the second half (82-46). In the final 20 minutes of play the Friars were outscored, 54-31.
Inga Orekhova finished with a game high 21 points. Orekhova shot 6-11 from the field, including 5-8 from three point range. As a team the Bulls finished 33-70 from the field and 9-22 from beyond the arc.
Two Friars joined Roberts in double figures including sophomore Tori Rule (Minneapolis, Minn.) and freshman Evi Iiskola (Espoo, Finland) with 13 and 10 points, respectively. Harris added nine points and hauled in a career-high 13 rebounds.
Providence returns to action on Tuesday, February 12 when it hosts Connecticut at Alumni Hall/Mullaney Gymnasium in Providence, R.I. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. The game will be televised on SNY. Please check your local listings for availability.
