Late Rally Falls Short As Women's Hoops Drops a 59-50 Decision At West Virginia

MORGANTOWN, W. Va. - The Providence College women's basketball team fell to West Virginia, 59-50, on February 10 at the WVU Coliseum in Morgantown, W. Va. Sophomore Mi-Khida Hankins (Baltimore, Md.) led the Friars with 15 points and junior Brittany Dorsey (Detroit, Mich.) chipped in 10 points.

In the first half, the Friars got down by as many as 11 (22-11) with 6:42 remaining on the clock. The Friars scored five unanswered points to get within six (22-16) with 4:16 left before Alex Sanabria knocked down a three-pointer to push the WVU lead to nine (25-16) at the 3:36 mark. Providence responded with back-to-back buckets to inch within five, but the Mountaineers answered the challenge with seven-straight points to take a 32-20 lead into the locker room at the half. Senior Chelsea Marandola (Johnston, R.I.) led the Friar offense with seven points in the opening session, while Sarah Miles netted 10 points for WVU.

The Mountaineers outscored the Friars, 9-4, in the first five minutes of the second half to take a 41-24 lead into the media timeout. Five of WVU's nine points were scored by Miles. WVU continued to create offensively and pushed its lead to 21 (49-28) by the 11-minute mark. The Mountaineers posted their largest lead of the game (22 points) with 6:01 remaining in the game with the score showing 58-36.

At that point, the Friars outscored the Mountaineers, 14-1, down the stretch. However, the deficit was too large to overcome and WVU earned the 59-50 win.

Miles finished the night with 19 points. Liz Repella recorded a double-double on 13 points and 12 boards. Ashley Powell also netted 13 points to go along with her game-high eight assists.

The Friars return to action on Saturday, February 14 against BIG EAST foe Georgetown at Alumni Hall/Mullaney Gymnasium in Providence, R.I. Tip-off is scheduled for 2:05 p.m. and the game is scheduled to be televised live on BETV. Check your local listings for availability.
