Women's Basketball Drops 70-49 Decision At St. John's

QUEENS, N.Y. - The Providence College women's basketball team fell to St. John's, 70-49, in BIG EAST Conference play on Feb. 8 in Queens, N.Y. Aliyyah Handford paced all scorers in the game with 26 points for St. John's and added 11 rebounds, two assists and three steals. Alison Lewis recorded a team-best 11 points and six boards for the Friars.

Providence trailed by just five (22-17) with 4:45 remaining in the first half, but St. John's closed out the opening half with a 19-6 scoring advantage and took a 37-23 lead into the locker room at the break.

Ball security was significant factor in the first half as St. John's out-scored the Friars 21-11 in points off of turnovers. Providence turned the ball over 18 times, while St. John's finished the half with 14 miscues.

Providence started the second half on a 7-2 run to get within nine (39-30), but it was as close as the Friars would get the rest of the way.

Karin Robinson and Chanise Baldwin each tallied nine points in the Friar effort, as Lewis was the only team member to crack double digits in the scoring column.

Providence took better care of the ball in the second half, but St. John's still managed to out-score the Friars 30-20 in points off of turnovers. St. John's also recorded a 14-6 advantage in fast break points.

The Friars return to action on Sunday, Feb. 15 against BIG EAST foe Creighton in Omaha, Neb. The game will be broadcast live on the BIG EAST Digital Network (BEDN) and may be viewed by downloading the FOX Sports GO app on your mobile device or tablet. Tip-off is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
