Women's Hoops Drops 65-50 Decision At Butler

INDIANAPOLIS, IND. - The Providence College women's basketball team fell to Butler, 65-50, on Feb. 7 at Hinkle Fieldhouse in Indianapolis, Ind. Sophomore Allegra Botteghi (Bologna, Italy) matched her career-high in scoring with 15 points and added a team-best six rebounds to pace the Friars.

The Friars trailed by as many as 10 points in the first half (28-18), but closed the second quarter with an 11-4 scoring advantage to get within three (32-29) at halftime. Evi Iiskola led the Friars with nine points in the first half, on 3-4 shooting from the field. She also was 3-3 from the free-throw line and collected two steals. Sydney Buck led Butler with seven points.

Sarah Beal (Matthews, N.C.) knifed through the lane to open the scoring in the third quarter with 9:14 on the clock. Providence missed its next five shots, while Butler got loose on a 7-0 run to take a 39-31 lead at the media timeout (4:59). Botteghi halted the Bulldog's run with a short jumper from the left side with 4:53 on the clock to make the score 39-33. Butler took a six-point advantage into the fourth and final quarter (46-40).

In the fourth quarter, Providence cut the deficit to five points (51-46) with 6:57 to play as Clara Che (Valencia, Spain) drilled a three-point bucket from the left wing. Butler answered with five-straight points to push back out to a 10-point advantage with 5:04 remaining (56-46).

Providence cut the lead to six (56-50) with 2:49 on the clock, but Butler was able to pull away with a three-point bucket from Blaire Langlois. As she converted the triple, her teammate Belle Obert was fouled during the play. Obert hit one of two shots from the line to give the Bulldogs back their 10-point lead with 1:28 on the clock (60-50), and killed the Friars' late momentum. Butler added five late points to close the scoring and take the 15-point victory.

Iiskola joined Botteghi in double figures with 11 points. Beal contributed nine points, four rebounds and four assists. Jovana `Yoyo' Nogic (Lisbon, Portugal) also dished four assists in the game to go along with five points.

The Friars return to action on Sunday, Feb. 14 against Creighton at Alumni Hall/Mullaney Gymnasium in Providence, R.I. The game is scheduled to tip-off at 1:00 p.m. and will be broadcast live on the BIG EAST Digital Network (BEDN) via FOX Sports GO.

The Friars' match-up vs. Creighton will serve as the back-drop for the program's annual Pinkout Friartown event to raise awareness and funds to fight the battle against breast cancer. All proceeds raised at the game from Pinkout Friartown t-shirt sales and donations will benefit the Gloria Gemma Breast Cancer Resource Foundation. The Friars will be wearing custom white uniforms with pink trim and pink sneakers. We ask that fans attending the game also wear pink to show their support in the battle against breast cancer.
