The Providence College women's basketball team fell to Cincinnati, 60-56, on Tuesday, February 7 at Alumni Hall in Providence, R.I. Sophomore Alicia Cropper (Brooklyn, N.Y.) was the lone Friar in double figures. Chanel Chisholm led four Bearcats in double digits with a game-high 17 points.
The Friars led by as many as six points in the first half and took a 26-25 lead into the locker room. The Friars maintained their one-point lead (30-29) 1:40 into the second half as the teams traded baskets. Cincinnati then went on an 18-6 scoring run to take a 47-36 lead with 9:35 to play.
Providence chipped away at the lead and eventually got within two points (55-53) with 45 seconds left, but the Bearcats sealed the victory with 5-7 free-throw shooting down the stretch and two timely offensive rebounds off of their two misses at the line.
Senior Teya Wright (Paterson, N.J.) contributed nine points and nine rebounds in the game for Providence. Fellow senior Rachel Barnes (Windsor, Conn.) hauled in a career-high 10 rebounds as the Friar held a 36-34 edge in the rebounding column. Sophomore Lauren Okafor (New Haven, Conn.) added eight points, six rebounds and two blocked shots in just 16 minutes of play.
Joining Chisholm in double figures for Cincinnati was Bjonee Reaves (13 points), Tiffany Turner (11 points) and Dayeesha Hollins (11 points). Chisholm led the Bearcats on the boards with nine rebounds.
The Friars return to action on Saturday, February 11 against BIG EAST foe Seton Hall at Alumni Hall/Mullaney Gymnasium in Providence, R.I. Tip-off is slated for 2:05 p.m., and the game will be televised live on Cox Sports (Cox 3, Cox 1030).
