Late Drought Dooms Women's Basketball At Villanova, 59-53

VILLANOVA, Pa. - The Providence College women's basketball team fell to Villanova, 59-53, on Saturday, January 4 at The Pavilion in Villanova, Pa. Providence was held scoreless for over seven minutes late in the second half and proved to be the difference in the game. Senior Teya Wright (Paterson, N.J.) recorded a game-high 21 points and added seven boards in the Friar effort. Sophomore Alicia Cropper (Brooklyn, N.Y.) chipped in 14 points for the game, but was limited to just three points in the second half.

The Friars led 22-18 in the first half before the Wildcats went on a 12-0 scoring run to take a 30-22 lead with 4:49 to play. The Friars responded with a 13-0 run to close the half and take a 35-30 lead into the break. Wright fueled the run with six points. Cropper led all scorers in the first half with 11 points. She was 4-6 from the field, including 3-3 from three-point territory. Lauren Burford led Villanova in the opening 20 minutes with nine points on 3-3 shooting from behind the arc.

Providence led 49-45 on Cropper's career-high fourth three-point bucket of the game with 8:00 to play, but the Wildcats answered with a 10-0 run to take a 55-49 lead. The Friars' offensive drought lasted 7:32, as Providence finally got back on the board with 28 seconds left. Providence got within three (56-53) with 12 seconds left, but the drought proved too costly. Villanova sealed the victory by hitting 3-4 free throws in the final seconds.

Burford finished the day with a team-best 17 points for Villanova. Devon Kane added 13 and Rachel Roberts check in with 10. The Friars limited Laura Sweeney to nine points and six rebounds.

Providence out-rebounded Villanova, 41-35. The Friars were paced by junior Symone Roberts' (New Britain, Conn.) eight boards. Wright added seven rebounds. The Wildcats victory was spurred by hitting 9-19 three point baskets (47.4-percent).

The Friars return to action on Tuesday, February 7 against BIG EAST foe Cincinnati. The game is slated for 7:00 p.m. at Alumni Hall/Mullaney Gymnasium in Providence, R.I.
