Xavier Pulls Away Late To Defeat Women's Basketball, 68-57

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College women's basketball team fell to Xavier, 68-57, on Sunday, Feb. 1 at Alumni Hall in Providence, R.I. Alison Lewis tallied 15 points for the Friars, while Chanise Baldwin hauled in a game-high eight rebounds. Xavier was led offensively by three players in double figures, including a game-high 18 points from Briana Glover.

Xavier mounted a 12-4 lead during the first 5:42 of play in the first half. Providence clawed its way back and cut the Musketeers lead to two (17-15) with 8:50 on the clock, but Xavier knocked down back-to-back buckets to push its lead to six (21-15) with 6:26 to play. The Friars closed the half with a 15-5 scoring advantage to take a 30-26 lead at the break, including an 8-0 run over the final 2:41 of the half.

Lewis led the Friars with eight points in the opening half, while Allegra Botteghi posted seven points. All seven of Botteghi's points came during the final 3:13 of the half.

Providence opened the second half on a 4-0 run to take its largest lead of the game (34-26) during the first minute of play. Xavier responded with a 12-2 run to take a 38-36 lead with 14:49 remaining on the clock, and never looked back. Providence would tie the game five times, including a 53-53 score with 5:08 left to play. The Musketeers finished the game with a 15-4 scoring advantage to claim the 11 points victory.

The Friars return to action on Friday, Feb. 6 against BIG EAST foe Seton Hall in South Orange, N.J. Tip-off is scheduled for 8:00 p.m., and the game will be nationally-televised on FOX Sports 1. Check your local listings for availability. Providence will remain on the road to face St. John's on Sunday, Feb. 8 in Queens, N.Y. The game will be broadcast on ESPN3 and is scheduled to tip-off at 2:00 p.m.
