Women's Basketball Falls To Syracuse, 80-54

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College women's basketball team fell to BIG EAST foe Syracuse, 80-54, on Tuesday, January 31 at Alumni Hall in Providence, R.I. Iasia Hemingway led five Orange in double figures with a game-high 24 points. Senior Teya Wright (Paterson, N.J.) led Providence with 15 points, while fellow senior Rachel Barnes (Windsor, Conn.) added 13 points and a team-best five rebounds.

The Friars hit the first bucket of the game, but Syracuse immediately seized control with an impressive shooting performance from the field and from the free throw line. The Orange hits 57.8-percent of their field goal attempts (26-45), including 55.6-percent from three point territory (5-9). Syracuse also shot a perfect 23-23 from the charity stripe.

Providence hit 36.8-percent of its shots from the field (21-57), including 30.8-percent from three point land (4-13). However, the Friars couldn't make up the margin at the foul line, as they hit just 50-percent (8-16). Syracuse also dominated the boards, 39-20.

Syracuse led by double-digits just 9:49 into the first half, and led by as many as 31 (75-44) with 4:11 to play.

Joining Hemingway in double digits for Syracuse were Shakeya Leary (15 points), Rachel Coffey (13 points), Carmen Tyson-Thomas (11 points) and Kayla Alexander (10 points). Alexander added a game-high eight rebounds.

The Friars return to action on Saturday, February 4 against Villanova at 2:00 p.m. The game will be played at The Pavilion in Villanova, Pa. It marks the second meeting of the season between the two teams. The Wildcats defeated the Friars, 69-42, on January 7 in Providence, R.I.
