Women's Basketball Defeated By No. 21 St. John's, 69-53

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College Friars were defeated by No. 21 St. John's, 69-53, on Saturday, January 29 at Alumni Hall in Providence, R.I. The Friars fall to 9-10 (2-5 BIG EAST) on the season as the Red Storm improve to 15-6 (4-4 BIG EAST).

The Friars trailed at the half, 28-24, after the Red Storm shot the ball well in the first period, shooting 12-28 from the floor (42.9%) compared to PC's 9-32 (28.1%). Centhya Hart led St. John's with six points and two rebounds in the half. Providence was paced by senior Lola Wells (Fontana, Calif.) and Miranda Tate (Bolingbrook, Ill.) who each scored six points.

The Friars got within one point (28-27) after Symone Roberts (New Britain, Conn.) opened the second half with a 3-pointer. St. John's then when on a 16-4 run to open up a 44-31 lead with 12:20 left to play. The closest the Friars would get was 57-50 at 4:05 when Tate hit a three-pointer.

Da'Shena Stevens led the Red Storm with 22 points, while Shenneika Smith provided 11 points and seven rebounds of her own. Tate led the Friars with 13 points. Mi-Khida Hankins (Baltimore, Md.) also finished in double figures, recording 11 points to go along with five rebounds. St. John's shot 26-52 from the floor (50.0%) for the game compared to PC's 19-56 (33.9%).

Providence College will return to action at when they travel to Morgantown, W. Va., to face No. 8 West Virginia on Tuesday, February 1. The game is scheduled to begin at 7:00 p.m.
