Women's Basketball Falls At Villanova, 64-48

VILLANOVA, Pa. - The Providence College women's basketball team suffered a 64-48 loss at Villanova on Tuesday, January 27 at The Pavilion in Villanova, Pa. With the loss, the Friars fall to 8-12 overall (2-5 BIG EAST), while Villanova improves to 12-8 (4-2 BIG EAST).

Providence was held scoreless in the final 7:37 of the first half, but only trailed by nine (26-17) at halftime. The Friars held a 17-15 lead when they scored their final basket of the half, and were outscored 11-0 heading into the break. Villanova connected on 9-of-23 attempts from the field in the half, including 6-of-12 three-point buckets. The Friars connected on just 6-of-23 attempts from the field (1-5 from three). Laura Kurz scored 11 of the Wildcat's 26 points, while Chelsea Marandola (Johnston, R.I.) paced the Friars with seven points in the opening 20 minutes.

Villanova started the second half on a 6-0 run to increase its lead to 15 (32-17). Mi-Khida Hankins (Baltimore, Md.) halted the run at 16:43 with an old-fashioned three-point play (32-20). The lead quickly swelled into the 20s for the Wildcats - and Kurz converted a three-point play to give Villanova a 31-point advantage with just 5:46 left (58-27). Providence managed just seven field goals in the second half - three of which came in the final minute of play. Though they did not shoot well from the field in the second half, the Friars hit 15-of-16 attempts from the free-throw line.

Marandola finished the night with a team-best 12 points. Kurz led all scorers for Villanova with 22 points. Tia Grant added 10 points.

Providence returns to action on Saturday, January 31 against #6/11 Louisville. The game will be played at Alumni Hall/Mullaney Gymnasium in Providence, R.I. Tip-off is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
