Women's Basketball Drops Second-Straight Game With 64-54 Loss To Seton Hall
Jan. 25, 2003 SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. - The Providence College women's basketball team fell to Seton Hall, 64-54, in BIG EAST Conference action on Saturday, January 25 in South Orange, N.J. Sophomore guard Michal Epstein (Rehovot, Israel) led the Friars with 13 points. Seniors Brooke Freeburg (Waterford, Pa.) and Kacee Wheeler (Bakersfield, Calif.) added 10 points each to the Friar offense. The two squads were tied, 28-28, at halftime. Wheeler led the Friars at the half with eight points, followed by Freeburg and Epstein who each netted six points apiece. Seton Hall was led in the first half by Melissa Langlier and Monica Johnson who each tallied six points. Providence shot 52.2 percent (12-23) from the field in the first half, and 75.0 percent (3-4) from the free-throw line. The Pirates connected on 11-of-27 attempts from the field, including five-of-five attempts from beyond the three point arc for a field-goal percentage of 40.7 percent. Ten of Providence's 28 points were scored off of 10 Seton Hall turnovers. The Friars committed eight turnovers in the first half. The Pirates started the second half on a 19-7 run to take a 45-35 lead at the 9:54 mark. The run was fueled by Johnson, who scored nine points in the stretch. Seton Hall extended its lead to 56-43 on a three-pointer by Langelier with 7:41 on the clock and marked the largest Pirate lead of the day. Seton Hall was led offensivley by Johnson and Simona Burgess who netted 19 and 11 points, respectively. The Pirates outrebounded the Friars, 37-28. Ashley Bush recorded a game-high nine rebounds for Seton Hall. Sophomore forward Jessica Simmonds (South Orange, N.J.) added a team-high eight rebounds for Providence.
Providence (8-9, 2-4 BIG EAST) returns to Providence, R.I. to take on Rutgers University in BIG EAST Conference action on Tuesday, January 28. The game is scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m. and will be played in Alumni Hall's Mullaney Gymnasium on the campus of Providence College.
