Women's Hoops Rallies To Defeat Marquette, 66-58

MILWAUKEE, WIS. - The Providence College women's basketball team defeated BIG EAST foe Marquette, 66-58, on Jan. 23 at the Al McGuire Center in Milwaukee, Wis. The Friars overcame a 12-point deficits en route to their first road win of the season.

Freshman guard Alison Lewis recorded a career-high 17 points on 6-9 shooting from the field and 5-7 shooting from the free-throw line. Senior Chanise Baldwin (Pontiac, Mich.), who was saddled with foul trouble in the first half, scored each of her 14 points in the decisive second half.

The Friars trailed by as many as 11 (22-11) with 5:28 remaining in the first half of play. Providence used a 9-0 run to cut the deficit to two points (22-20) with 2:35 on the clock. Marquette closed the half with an 11-5 scoring advantage to take a 33-25 lead into the locker room at the break.

Lewis led the Friars with nine points at halftime, while Alexis Harris (Detroit, Mich.) hauled in a team-best seven boards. The Friars shot just 26-percent from the field in the opening 20 minutes (10-38). Seven of their 10 field goals came in the final six minutes of the half. Marquette shot 44-percent in the opening half (12-27).

Marquette held its largest lead of the night (39-27) with 18:15 remaining in the game. Providence went on a 19-2 run to take a five-point lead (46-41) with 11:31 to play. Marquette answered with an 11-6 run to regain a five-point lead (52-47) with 8:05 on the clock. The Friars took a 58-57 lead with 3:17 left and maintained the lead the rest of the way.

Senior Karin Robinson joined Lewis and Baldwin in double figures with 13 points, and added eight rebounds, four assists and four steals. Harris finished the night with a game-high 11 boards, including eight on the offensive end of the floor.

Arlesia Morse was the lone player in double figures for Marquette, with 19. Apiew Ojulu and Kenisha Bell each added nine points.

Providence returns to action on Sunday, Jan. 25 against DePaul. The game will be played at McGrath-Phillips Arena in Chicago, Ill. Tip-off is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. ET.
