Women's Basketball Falls At Rutgers, 60-39

PISCATAWAY, N.J - The Providence College women's basketball team fell to Rutgers, 60-39, in BIG EAST play on January 22 at the Louis Brown Athletic Center in Piscataway, N.J. Rutgers was led by Chelsey Lee, who recorded a double-double on 15 points and 11 rebounds, while fellow front-court player Monique Oliver also posted 15 points. Providence was led offensively by senior Teya Wright (Paterson, N.J.), who netted 10 points and grabbed five rebounds.

The Friars led 10-8 with 10:55 remaining on the clock in the first half. Rutgers went on a 20-7 run to take a 28-17 lead heading into the final media time out of the half with 3:51 left on the clock. Both teams went scoreless from that point until freshman Alicia Cropper (Brooklyn, N.Y.) collected a steal and took it in for an uncontested lay-up, making the score 28-19. Rutgers' April Sykes answered on the other end with a jumper from the elbow with 56-seconds remaining in the half.

The Friars' responded with a pair of free-throws from Wright to make the score 30-21 with 41-seconds on the clock. Oliver closed the scoring for Rutgers with a lay-up at 16-seconds. Rutgers took a 32-21 lead into the locker room. Freshman Lauren Okafor (New Haven, Conn.) led Providence in the first half with six points. Oliver led Rutgers with 10 points.

Midway through the second half, the Friars still were within striking distance with the score showing 43-32 at the 11:11 mark. The Friars then missed their next 11 shots and converted just one free throw as Rutgers mounted a 52-33 lead with 4:45 to play. Rutgers finished the game with an 8-6 scoring advantage to seal the win.

The Friars will return to action on Saturday, January 29 against No. 23 St. John's in BIG EAST regular-season play. The game will be played at Alumni Hall/Mullaney Gymnasium in Providence, R.I. Tip-off is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
