Women's Hoops Falls Short At Seton Hall, 55-43

SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. - The Providence College women's basketball team fell to Seton Hall, 55-43, on Jan. 20 in South Orange, N.J. Yoyo Nogic (Lisbon, Portugal) and Clara Che (Valencia, Spain) combined to score 23 points for Providence, who dropped to 9-10 overall (1-7 BIG EAST). Deja Winters came off the bench to score 18 points for the Pirates, who improved to 9-10 (2-6 BIG EAST).

The Friars held an 11-10 lead after the first quarter of play, but the Pirates managed to outscore Providence 14-7 in the second quarter to take a 24-18 lead at halftime. Providence struggled from the field during the second frame, hitting just 3-of-15 attempts from the floor (.200). Meanwhile, Seton Hall shot the ball at a 54-percent clip (7-13) to gain the six-point advantage.

Providence closed the deficit to three on two occasions early in the third quarter. Che nailed a three-pointer with 8:35 on the clock to open the scoring and make it a 24-21 game. Seton Hall followed with a pair of free throws before Ny'Dajah Jackson (Oakland, Calif). hit a jumper with 6:52 remaining, to get Providence within 26-23.

From that point, the Pirates went on a 9-2 run to gain a 35-25 lead with 2:18 on the clock. Nogic responded by scoring seven-straight points for the Friars to cut the Pirates' lead to five heading into the fourth quarter (37-32).

Seton Hall opened the final frame with back-to-back buckets to take a 12-point lead. Nogic again answered the call with a three-pointer to get it back to single-digits (44-35) with 7:07 left in the game, but a comeback was not in the cards. The Pirates extended their lead to as many as 16 (55-39) with 1:55 on the clock to take control down the stretch.

Nogic scored 10 of her team-high 12 points in the second half, while Che chipped in 11 points for Providence. Allegra Botteghi (Bologna, Italy) finished the night with eight points and a game-high 10 rebounds.

Providence held a 39-33 advantage on the boards in the game, including a 20-11 edge on the offensive glass. However, the Friars were unable to capitalize on their extra possessions as Seton Hall held a slim, 10-8, advantage in second-chance points.

The Friars return to action on Sunday, Jan. 22 against St. John's. Tip-off is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. in Queens, N.Y. The game will be broadcast live on the BIG EAST Digital Network (BEDN) via FOX Sports GO.
