PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The 19th-ranked Marquette University women's basketball team escaped with a 79-77 victory over Providence College in a BIG EAST match-up on January 20 at Alumni Hall/Mullaney Gymnasium in Providence, R.I. Senior Shauna Snyder (Albuquerque, N.M.) and sophomore Chelsea Marandola (Johnston, R.I.) each scored 20 points for PC, who falls to 12-7 overall and 2-4 in the BIG EAST. Marquette got a game-high 24 points from Krystal Ellis, including the go-ahead basket with 11-seconds left in regulation to take the win. The Golden Eagles improve to 17-2 overall (5-1 BIG EAST).

Marquette took a 17-point lead into halftime before being outscored by the Friars in the second half, 49-34. Providence took its first lead of the second half with 2:49 remaining as sophomore Catherine Bove (Cincinnati, Ohio) hit a base-line jumper to make the score 72-71. Bove then picked off a pass and drove the length of the floor for a lay-up to give PC a 74-71 lead. With 1:37 left in the game, Marandola converted one-of-two free throws to give PC it's largest lead at 75-71.

Danielle Kamm answered for Marquette with a three-point bucket at the 1:27 mark to get the Golden Eagles back within one (75-74). Kamm followed with a lay-up to put Marquette ahead, 76-75, with 42-seconds left in the contest. Providence freshman point guard Kendria Holmes (Charlotte, N.C.) put the Friars back on top (77-76) off a driving lay-up with 21-seconds remaining, but Ellis scored the go-ahead bucket for Marquette in the same fashion with 11-seconds left. After a Providence timeout, the Friars had a chance to win the game with its final possession. But Holmes' lay-up would not fall in and Kamm grabbed the defensive rebound. With no time left on the clock, Kamm was fouled and sent to the free-throw line where she made the first and missed the second attempt. The Golden Eagles escaped with a 79-77 win.

Joining Snyder and Marandola in double figures for PC was Bove (17 points) and Holmes (10 points). Freshman Emily Cournoyer (North Attleboro, Mass.) added eight points and a game-high 10 rebounds. Holmes dished a team-high five assists. Bove dished four assists and grabbed a game-high four steals.
