Women's Basketball Falls At Xavier, 68-59

CINCINNATI, OHIO - The Providence College women's basketball team fell to Xavier, 68-59, on Friday, Jan. 19 at the Cintas Center in Cincinnati, Ohio. The Friars dropped to 8-12 overall (1-7 BIG EAST), while Xavier improved to 9-10 (2-6).

The Friars got out to a slow start and found themselves trailing 22-17 at the conclusion of the first quarter. The squad started to find its rhythm in the second quarter, but was unable to chip away at the deficit as both teams finished the stanza with 12 points. Xavier took a 35-19 advantage into halftime, capped by a three-quarter-court shot by Na'Teshia Owens as time expired.

The Musketeers opened the scoring in the third with a free-throw to make it a 16-point game (35-19). However, Providence clawed all of the way back to within two (44-42) with a dominant performance on both ends of the floor, and was fueled by a 23-9 scoring advantage. Xavier closed the quarter with a three-point bucket from Aaliyah Dunham and the Friars trailed by five (47-42) heading into the final 10 minutes of play.

Anniina Aijanen connected on another three-pointer for the Musketeers to open the fourth quarter scoring, and provided Xavier with an eight-point cushion (50-42) with 8:06 remaining on the game clock. Providence's Maddie Jolin (Rehoboth, Mass.) answered with a with a short jumper, but the Musketeers responded with a 12-0 scoring spurt and mounted an 18-point lead (62-44) with 5:58 left to play.

Jolin halted the run with a three-point bucket at the 5:40 mark and spurred the Friars to a 13-2 offensive outburst, which cut the deficit to seven (64-57) with 1:54 on the clock. However, Xavier would hold on down the stretch to take the 68-59 win.

Jolin paced the Friars with 19 points and added five rebounds and three assists. Jovana Nogic (Belgrade, Serbia) chipped in 15 points, five boards and two assists, while Clara Che (Valencia, Spain) added 10 points and three assists.

Despite shooting just 18.2-percent in the first quarter (2-11), the Friars went on to finish the game 44.2-percent from the floor (23-52), including an impressive 8-15 from three-point territory (53.3-percent). The Friars offense was clicking in the second half, as they hit 15-26 attempts from the floor (57.7-percent), including 7-9 from beyond the arc (77.8-percent).

Aijanen finished with 19 points and 11 rebounds for Xavier. Kindell Fincher added 14 points, while Jada Byrd tallied 11 points and four assists.

The Friars return to action on Sunday, Jan. 21 against Butler in BIG EAST action. Tip-off is set for 1:00 p.m. at Hinkle Fieldhouse in Inianapolis, Ind.
