Women's Basketball Wins Second-Straight Conference Game With 75-61 Victory Over West Virginia
Jan. 15, 2003 PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College women's basketball team defeated West Virginia, 75-61, in BIG EAST Conference action on Wednesday, January 15 in Providence, R.I. Sophomore guard Michal Epstein (Rehovot, Israel) led all scorers with 21 points for the Friars. Senior center/forward Kacee Wheeler (Bakersfield, Calif.) recorded her second-consecutive double-double with a career-high 18 points and 11 rebounds. The two squads were tied at the halftime break, 35-35. Epstein and Wheeler combined for 23 of the Friars' 35 points with 13 and 10 points, respectively. PC shot a blistering 61.9-percent in the half on 13-of-21 shooting from the floor, including three-of-six shooting from beyond the three point arc. West Virginia's Kate Bulger finished the first half with a team-high nine points. Yolanda Paige netted nine points and added seven assists. Bulger finished the game with a team-high 17 points and five rebounds. Sherell Sowho was second in scoring for the Mountaineers with 14 points, while Paige finished with 10 points and seven assists. In the second half of play, Providence outscored West Virginia 40-26. The Friar offense was fueled by junior guard Kristin Quinn (Sewell, N.J.) who netted all of her 11 points in the second half. With 7:57 remaining in the ball game and a one-point Mountaineer lead, Quinn connected on a three-point basket to put the Friars on top for good, 56-54. Quinn also was fouled on the play and hit the ensuing free-throw to make the score 57-54. From that point, Providence would go on a 18-7 run to close out the game and earn it's second-straight victory.
Providence College (7-7, 2-2 BIG EAST) will host Dartmouth in non-conference action on Saturday, January 18 in Providence, R.I. The game is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. and will be held in Alumni Hall's Mullaney Gymnasium on campus of Providence College.
