The Providence College women's basketball team fell to No. 3/3 Connecticut, 96-35, on Tuesday, January 10 at the XL Center in Hartford, Conn. Tiffany Hayes and Bria Hartley each recorded 19 points for the Huskies, while Providence was led offensively by Lauren Okafor (New Haven, Conn.), who posted eight points on 4-4 shooting.
Providence fell victim to a smothering defense in the first half and headed into the locker room facing a 48-17 deficit. The Huskies outscored the Friars, 17-2, in points off turnovers. UConn also held a 30-8 advantage in the paint. Hartley led all scorers with 15 points in the opening 20 minutes. Seniors Lola Wells (Fontana, Calif.) and Teya Wright (Paterson, N.J.) recorded four points each for the Friars.
The second half was much of the same as the Huskies outscored the Friars, 48-18. Connecticut finished the game with a 42-18 advantage in rebounding. The Huskies recorded assists on 29 of their 36 field goals on the evening. Providence finished the night with a season-high 26 turnovers, which UConn converted into 33 points. The final margin for points in the paint favored the Huskies, 56-14.
The Friars return to action on Saturday, January 14 against BIG EAST foe West Virginia. The game will be played at Alumni Hall/Mullaney Gymnasium in Providence, R.I. Tip-off is slated for 2:00 p.m.
